Nobody’s perfect

Ok, so I got it wrong last week. TERRIBLY wrong. First off, I expected the Pats to squash the Chargers, but they actually held their own and could have had a chance to win it if they would have gone for it on 4th down and not have punted it. But, alas, the Patriots won, becoming the first team to ever be 18-0. More on their perfect record in a minute.

So, I got to watch the Packers-Giants game and I will admit the better team won. I just hate to admit it, especially since I thought the Packers had the best chance to beat the Patriots. The Giants ran the ball well with Bradshaw and Jacobs. Not two of the most well-known backs, but they will be better known pretty soon, playing in a few nationally televised games. The Eli-Plaxico hookup worked wonders for the Giants too. Al Harris was trying (for the most part), but he just kept getting out of position. I think Plaxico really showed everyone what he was capable of. And their D. They stopped the Packers run game, so they had to rely on Favre more, and, well, he reverted to himself of last year. That second interception was heartbreaking. I just sat in disbelief after he threw it…knowing the Giants were gonna come down and win the game. What I can’t figure out though is how their kicker can go from missing two 37-yd FGs, yet make a 47-yd FG to win it. Oh well, it was still a great season for the Packers. Nobody expected them to be this good. They’ll be back next year, as well as Favre.

Now, for my Super Bowl pick (version 3). I am going to go with the Patriots, I am going to cheer for the Patriots too. Yes, it was a close game in the regular season, but I don’t think that won’t be the case this time around. Yes, it might be close again, but the Pats will come away with the win once again. Why am I cheering for the Patriots? Why not the Giants bc then I could say my team lost to the eventual World Champions? Well, first, I think that is a dumb reason to cheer for a team. Who cares that you lost to the eventual World Champions (if the even win). No one will remember that. They’ll only remember the champion. Second, I want the Patriots to cream the Giants since my team lost to the Giants. I want revenge! lol Thirdly, we are in an era of new records being set in all sports, so to see the Patriots go through the regular season undefeated like they did was really cool. History in the making…and still continuing. They just became the first team to ever go 18-0 and have a chance to go 19-0. That is pure history. I appreciate Tom Brady. I respect Randy Moss. I think Wes Welker was a steal and will continue to pay great dividends to the Patriots. And those are three other reasons that I think the Patriots will pull it off.

Pick: Patriots over Giants 38-28

Save him!

The Miami Heat are 8-33 as of this writing. Pitiful. Absolutely pitiful. I feel sorry for Dwayne Wade, so I think I might start a campaign to save him and get him out of Miami so he can have a great career he showed us he is capable of having. Now, his injuries and surgeries haven’t helped much. I give the guy credit for trying to come back last year, but I think it just made it worse and set him back even more. But this guy is a great player. He led (with the Diesel) the Heat to the NBA Finals and won it back in 2005. He showed us he can get knocked around, slowed down, but not stopped. You couldn’t keep the guy grounded. We were needing a star like him and he came along at the perfect time. What the Heat didn’t realize is that they were getting older or if they did, they didn’t do anything about it. Everyone was expecting them to contend this year, but even when Wade scores 37 points in a game, they STILL can’t get a win. Wade just entered a new contract this year…he has three years on it and then a player option for the 4th year (the 2011-12 season). Now, a lot could happen between now and then. A lot NEEDS to happen…with the first being a goal to get younger, especially with the Diesel running out of fuel. If the Heat don’t seem to be committed to doing that after next year, I would starting asking for a trade after the 2010-11 season. Might as well. Wade’s a tremendous player and he deserves to be on a contender. Where would he go? I don’t know…depends on the landscape of the NBA after the next couple seasons. Atlanta has some decent young players; the Knicks could use a savior; the Bulls need a dynamic player too. So, there are some possibilities. The thing about a trade though is that he would command a lot of good players that one of those teams might not give up. So, seeing that a trade would be pretty hard to pull off right now or in the next year or two, the Heat need to get in gear. As I said earlier, they need to get younger. They need to draft well, which won’t be hard considering they are in the lottery right now. I would get rid of Shaq too…see if he will retire. I don’t know why the guy wouldn’t. He’s got 4 rings and is way past his prime. He can still throw it down, but he’s inconsistent. He could be a lot better than he is playing right now. So, unfortunately, the Heat are in need of rebuilding, but they have a great cornerstone in Wade. If they could dump some older guys, bring in a younger veteran alongside Wade, they would easily be back in contention in the East. But if they don’t get younger by 2010-11 season’s trading deadline, I would not be surprised at all to hear Wade ask for a trade. And if the Heat decide to go in the direction of getting rid of him, they would rather trade him than let him walk without any compensation. So, here’s to Dwayne Wade. Keep up the amazing work, don’t stop giving us highlights, but hope and pray that the Heat will do something about getting younger soon or you won’t be liking it there too much longer.

The Championship Games

Ok, so I was wrong about the Jaguars. We all can’t be perfect. I only missed two games last weekend, the Giants and Patriots winning games I predicted they would lose. I honestly found myself rooting for the G-men though. Its a good story and it made the Green Bay Packers’ road to the Super Bowl a little easier. Now, the Giants won’t be pushovers, but the game IS in Lambeau and it will be COLD and hopefully snowing. Its the best possible weather a game of football could be played in. I am going with the Packers, but it will be close for about the first 3 quarters or so, and then the Pack will continually run the ball, which will run out the clock and get ready to go to the Super Bowl.

As for the other conference….I feel sorry for the Chargers. Why you ask? Its the injuries for one. Philip Rivers will more than likely start, but he will start with an injury…LT went down, but he will play too. Gates was injured a couple weeks ago, but he’ll be just fine. BUT, even if they were all 100% healthy, there isn’t much of a chance they would win anyway. Philip Rivers is a little to inconsistent to be a great quarterback yet. LT is spectacular, but when you have a QB that doesn’t command a lot of attention, you can put 8 or 9 guys in the box and it will stop LT (or at least slow him down a little). It makes perfect sense….make the inconsistent QB beat you with his arm. I like picking underdogs…hence why I went with Jacksonville. But underdogs are usually picked with the idea that they actually do have a legitimate shot. The Jags did, but blew it. The Chargers really don’t. But its ok…if the Pats meet the Pack like I think they will, it will all be ok in the end.

So:
Packers 31-23 over the Giants
Patriots 38-17 over the Chargers

Next week, why the Packers have the team to beat the Patriots
